Seabrook, South Carolina
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Louis Frank Schleuger Jr. who departed this life peacefully on August 24th, at the age of 84. Louis was born on March 10, 1942, in Britt, Iowa to Eva Helen (nee Charbonneaux) and Louis Frank Schleuger Sr.
Louis wed Sanae Kamohara in February 1968 at the American Consulate in Naha, Okinawa (Japan). Louis and Sanae lived in numerous places in the United States and Japan during his years of military service and civil service before retiring in Beaufort, South Carolina.
Louis proudly served his country for 20 years in the United States Marine Corps rising to the rank of Master Sergeant. He spent most of his military career working as an electronics technician. Following his military retirement, Louis dedicated 18 years as a civil servant with the Department of Defense, achieving the rank of GS-13. During this time, he served as an auditor with the DoD Inspector General in Washington, D.C. and as a Financial and Resource Manager with the United States Navy Fleet and Industrial Supply Center and Defense Information Technology Center in Yokosuka, Japan.
In the private sector, Louis brought his extensive financial expertise to several organizations. He served as Vice President of Finance for Thunderbolt Marine (Thunderbolt, Georgia) and as a Staff Cost Accountant for both International Paper (Hilton Head, South Carolina) and ArrMaz Chemical Company (Lobeco, South Carolina). He also taught accounting and finance courses for the Los Angeles, California Metropolitan Community College overseas program in Okinawa, Japan and at the Technical College of the Lowcountry in Beaufort, South Carolina.
Louis was an avid outdoorsman and traveler. He traveled extensively, visiting 48 states and 19 foreign countries. He especially enjoyed his trips to Iowa and Wisconsin to visit his sisters, nieces, nephews and their spouses as well as his travels in the Carolinas to spend time with his beloved grandchildren. His hobbies included gardening, bowling, fishing, hunting, and genealogy. He spent countless hours tending to his garden and generously sharing the fruits and vegetables of his labor with others. He also enjoyed his time on the water fishing and shrimping, or in the woods hunting, alongside the many tall tales shared during those adventures.
Louis was committed to historical preservation and spent many years volunteering with the Norka Project for the American Historical Society of Germans from Russia. He meticulously analyzed seven years of Russian censuses of German ancestors (encompassing 218 families and their descendants) who settled in Norka, Russia. He maintained the Norka family database which included Norka’s censuses and Church Communion Registers as well as vital information of those that immigrated to America and Canada. Louis published his own maternal and paternal family histories dating back to 1657, and researched and published the pedigree charts for his nieces, nephews, and their spouses.
Louis is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Sanae; their children Louis (Allison) and Lucy (JK); and his three grandchildren, Molly, Elin, and Kyla. He is also survived by his three sisters: Katherine, Lucy Ann, and Shirley as well as his mother-in-law, Michiko, his sister-in-law, Michie, and brother-in-law, Akihiko (Namiko). He is preceded in death by his parents, Louis Sr and Eva Helen, and his granddaughter, Audra.
Through his dedicated service to his country, brilliant mind for finance, his love of the outdoors, and devotion to his family and history, Louis leaves a lasting impression on all the lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to express their deepest heartfelt thanks to dear friends Bill Murphy and Jewell and Amy Proctor during this difficult time as well as to all the other wonderful friends that provided support and a comforting presence.
