Millie Calderon

–

Beaufort, South Carolina

Milagros “Millie” Hernandez Calderon lived with gratitude, faith, and an unmistakable joy for life. She found beauty everywhere—in the moon and sunshine, the ocean, flowers and gardens, music, dancing, and most of all, in the people she loved. She was present, curious, adventurous, giving, and never afraid to live life fully.

Millie moved to Beaufort in 1989 and made the Lowcountry home. The ocean was especially important to her, and once she found life by the water, she never wanted to leave. She loved the beach, gardening, being outdoors, staying active, watching her New York Yankees, and cheering from the stands as her grandson Alex played baseball wearing #10—the same number Millie proudly wore during her own baseball and softball years.

For 37 years, Millie served the Beaufort community through her career at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. She began as a cashier, spent most of her career in leadership roles within Patient Financial Services, and finished her career with the Care Coordination team. She built lasting friendships throughout the hospital, but her greatest accomplishment was the family she built and loved so fiercely. Millie showed up—for birthdays, ballgames, piano lessons, celebrations, ordinary days, and everything in between.

At the center of her life was her loving husband, Hector Calderon, with whom she shared 36 years of life and love. She was a devoted mother to Nicole Rodriguez (Kyjuan) Evans and Benjamin Antonio (Sara Lynn) Calderon, and a proud and loving grandmother to Alex Noel Evans, Anthony Wildes Calderon, and Charlie Alexander Calderon. She also held a special place in her heart for her beloved godson, Oliver Arnold Jr.

Her family also included her stepchildren, Carolina Calderon and Victoria (Jose Gomez) Calderon; her step-grandchildren, Belicia (Gildardo) Pineda, Ivan (Skyler) Trevino, Israel Trevino, Dominic Gomez, and Eliana Trevino; and her step-great-grandchildren, whom she loved as part of her extended family.

Millie is further survived by her mother, Juana “Ita” Hernandez; her siblings, Jose Rodriguez, Miguel Rodriguez, Ruben Hernandez, Altagracia “Tati” Hernandez, Elizabeth (Oliver) Arnold, Carmen (Angel) Martinez, Fernando (Nancy) Hernandez, and Jennie (James) Petito; and her cousin, Ruthie Rivera, who was raised alongside her and loved as a sister.

She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Celia Calderon, and her siblings-in-law, Elva and Rudy Guerrero, Vivian and Charlie Marrujo, Victor and Penny Calderon, Mary and Cesario Quintana, Lucinda and Robert Jurado, and Robert Ray and Melissa Calderon.

Millie’s nieces and nephews held an incredibly special place in her heart. She loved them deeply, took great pride in each of them, and treasured the special relationships she shared with them throughout their lives.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ramon “Papi” Hernandez; her father-in-law, Victor Calderon Sr.; her siblings, Nilda Rodriguez, Pedro Hernandez, and Raymond Hernandez; and her beloved dogs, Teddy and Bayne, who were cherished members of her family.

Millie’s faith was at the heart of how she lived. She gave freely, loved deeply, and practiced gratitude every day. Even in death, she continued giving through organ donation, offering others the gift of life.

To know Millie was to know her light. She leaves behind a family and community forever changed by the way she loved them. Her legacy lives in the people she showed up for, the gratitude she practiced, and the way she taught us to stay present, find stillness, listen within, love deeply, find beauty in the ordinary, and never take a beautiful day for granted.
